Live hedge work, New Glade clearance

Meet outside the old brick and flint barn adjacent to the western entrance to the Roedale allotments. Phone 07719 943237 on the day, if lost!

We are a group of volunteers who care about our local environment and who came together to look after the urban woods of Hollingbury and Burstead, after they were devastated by the Great Storm of 1987. Initially priority was given to planting young trees to replace those lost in the storm, but over twenty years on we are more likely to be thinning trees out than adding them.

We meet once a month to carry out practical work in the woods, ranging from tree and hedge planting to path maintenance and litter clearance. This work is carried out under the guidance of a Brighton and Hove Countryside Service Brighton and Hove Countryside Service Ranger and our group’s Project Officer.  Gloves and tools are provided and no special skills are required - just enthusiasm!  For tasks such as tree thinning and planting a new hedge, training can be given.  The work is not too arduous and everyone works at their own pace. We stop mid morning for a break and a chat, with coffee, tea and biscuits provided.

These work sessions are always the first weekend of the month, alternating between a Saturday and a Sunday, and run from 10:00 and finish at 1:00.  See the activities page for dates.

Regular or occasional tasks have included:

·        keeping paths clear

·        litter clearance

·        maintaining paths

·        keeping sycamore under control
